On 20th March 2023, the first section of the electrified suburban rail network in Tunis was inaugurated. This concerns a 6.3 km line section serving the Tunisian capital’s south-western districts, initially linking Tunis main station to the suburban Bougatfa station, a part of Line E. A future phase will extend Line E from Bougatfa to Sijoumi with six additional stations. Construction works on the new line were realised by Société Générale d’Entreprise de Matériel et de Travaux (Somatra-Get), which was awarded the contract in November 2011. The inauguration of Line E was repeatedly delayed by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, having originally been scheduled for July 2021.
