EU and US plan feasibility studies for Lobito corridor

The European Union (EU) and the United States (US) announced at the G20 Summit in India that they will order feasibility studies for the expansion of the Lobito corridor between the port of Lobito in Angola and the Copperbelt mining area in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The measure is part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and is intended to expand the export opportunities and regional trade of the three countries in the long term through improved railway infrastructure. The partnership also plans to invest in digital access and agricultural value chains. In June 2023, the US development bank International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) announced it would provide €229 million (US$250 million) in support of the Lobito Corridor expansion.
