The Burundian government is planning to build an electrified standard-gauge railway (SGR) line to provide access to the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The Uvinza – Gitega line will comprise two sections. The first section will run for 156 km from Uvinza to Malagarazi in Tanzania and is estimated to cost €880.6 million (US$ 959.4 million). The second section will run for 126 km from Malagarazi to Gitega in Burundi and is estimated to cost €1.3 billion (US$ 1.4 billion).
