Construction work on the 12.5 km suburban rail line from Riruta to Ngong in Nairobi officially started on 19th December 2023. The project, which is being carried out by China Road & Bridge Corp on behalf of Kenya Railways (KR), aims to reduce road congestion and lower transport costs in Nairobi. The metre-gauge line will connect to the existing line in the residential suburb of Riruta. Construction work is expected to be completed within 12 months. Long-term plans are to extend the line to Kiserian and then back to Nairobi via Ongata Rongai.
