Agreement signed to build Lamu Port – Addis Ababa SGR line

The transport ministers of Kenya and Ethiopia have signed a bilateral agreement to build a new 3,000 km electrified standard-gauge rail (SGR) line from Lamu Port in Kenya to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The new line is part of the Lamu Port – South Sudan – Ethiopia (Lapsset) Transport Corridor Development Project, which focuses on the new Lamu Port. Construction of the new line is expected to start in 2025 and would cost €12.9 billion (US$ 13.8 billion). Kenya and Ethiopia are now jointly seeking funding for the project. Kenya is requesting €8.4 million from the African Union Infrastructure Fund for studies on the technical and economic feasibility of building the new line.
