Mitma to spend over €24 billion on rail infrastructure by 2026

The Spanish Ministry of Transport (Mitma) has allocated €24.2 billion up to 2026 for the expansion of regional passenger rail transport, and the maintenance and establishment of interoperability on the existing network. The Indicative Rail Strategy 2021-2026, adopted at the end of December 2022, has approved the development, maintenance, and renewal of rail infrastructure. The focus is on strengthening the networks for commuter rail (Cercanías) and rail freight, trans-European (TEN) corridors and interoperability. Mitma is also focused on eliminating bottlenecks, increasing efficiency and operational safety for rail freight and enhanced sustainability of rail transport.
