Alstom consortium wins contract to build metro line 1 in Cluj-Napoca

Railway technology company Alstom, in a consortium with Gülermak and Arcada, has been awarded a contract for the construction of metro line 1 in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. The full value of the turnkey project amounts to around €1.8 billion, with Alstom’s share of approx. €400 million. Under the contract, Alstom will be responsible for the system integration, signalling and telecommunications systems, power supply and track work, platform doors, security and control centre, as well as implementing proven cybersecurity throughout the system. In addition, Alstom will deploy communications-based train control (CBTC) supporting Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) for the first time in Romania, using its Urbalis CBTC signalling solution. The 21 km metro line 1 including 19 underground stations is to be completed over eight years. The 9 km first section with nine stations and an above-ground depot will be financed through the recovery and resilience plan (PNRR), and will be completed in four years.
