Tunnelling works on Agra Metro network reach Agra Fort station

Construction works on the Agra Metro network in India have reached an important milestone with a breakthrough achieved in boring the tunnel between Jama Masjid and Agra Fort stations. The works are being realised by a joint venture (JV) of Spanish company Typsa and Italferr, the consultancy subsidiary of Italian state railway FSI. On 25th April 2023, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) reached the site of the Agra Fort station and will next proceed to the Taj Mahal station. The TBM was launched in February 2023, and has since completed 334 m of tunnelling from the launch site at Ramleela Maidan. The JV was appointed in 2020 and construction works were launched in December 2020. The network worth €939 million (INR 83.8 billion) will consist of two lines with a combined length of 29.4 km and will connect all the city’s major tourist attractions with mainline railway stations. The 14 km line 1 from Sikandra to Taj East Gate will comprise a 6.4 km elevated section and a 7.6 km underground section with 13 stations. The 16.2 km line 2 from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar will comprise a 15.4 km elevated section and 800 m at grade with 14 stations.
