Construction starts on Metro Manila Subway project

Construction works have officially started on the Metro Manila Subway project. The project had previously been delayed after several issues concerning land ownership and right-of-way issues. The project worth €8.1 billion (US$8.8 billion) is being partially funded with a €2.5 billion loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The 33.1 km Metro Manila Subway project will run underground from Valenzuela City to Bicutan and Ninoy Aquino International Airport, serving eight city districts and 17 stations. The line will have a fleet of eight-car metros with capacity to transport more than 2,000 passengers per train. Once fully operational in 2028, it is estimated that the line will transport 500,000 passengers a day.
