Santiago – Valparaíso line to be upgraded for €1.22 billion

Chilean president Gabriel Boric has announced an upgrade of the existing 187 km Santiago – Valparaíso line. The upgrade is expected to cost €1.22 billion (US$1.32 billion) and construction could start in 2025 after the completion of the technical study, with the upgraded line to be operational by 2030. The line would start at Quinta station, 1 km east of Santiago Central station, and end in the El Salto district of Valparaíso. At a later stage, the line could be extended to the centre of Valparaíso by building a new tunnel through the La Dormida mountains, at an estimated cost of €2.01 billion (US$2.18 billion). There had previously been a proposal to build a new railway line between the cities on a line that was closed in 1987.
