Korean consortium to build Asunción – Ypacaraí LRT line

A Korean consortium consisting of the companies Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation has been awarded a contract to build a light rail transit (LRT) line in Asunción. To this end, the upper house of the Paraguayan Congress passed a special law for the LRT project. According to the bill, the consortium is to implement the project. However, the bill still needs to be passed by the lower house of the Paraguayan Congress, the Chamber of Deputies, so a contract is not expected to be signed until 2023. The project costs amount to €1.52 billion ($1.6 billion), and a 43 km line is planned to be built between Asunción and Ypacaraí. The consortium, which is also responsible for operating the line for 30 years, is expected to take about four years to build.
