US Class I railway company BNSF and US hydrogen supplier Bakken Energy are cooperating to study the role of rail transport from the perspective of consumers and transporters of hydrogen. On 4th January 2023, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this purpose. According to Bakken Energy, rail transport could play an important role in distributing clean hydrogen production. Moreover, Bakken Energy is currently working on the Heartland Hydrogen Hub proposal to develop a facility to produce hydrogen from natural gas. The Heartland Hydrogen Hub proposal is being developed by the US states of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and Wisconsin, and the partners are to bid for funding from the Federal Department of Energy’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs programme, worth €6.5 billion (US$7 billion), which was announced in September 2022.
