World Bank finances expansion of passenger transport in Casablanca with €304 million

On 9th June 2025, the World Bank approved a €303.8 million (US$350 million) financing package for the Greater Casablanca Mobility and Logistics Hub to improve the railway infrastructure and increase passenger rail transport in the region. As part of the project, Moroccan state railway ONCF is planning to start an electrified suburban rail service connecting the city centre of Casablanca with suburbs such as Zenata, Mohammedia, Nouaceur and Bouskoura. To this end, a 73 km of disused lines will be modernised to increase track capacity. In addition, the electrical and signalling systems will be upgraded and 15 stations will be modernised or rebuilt. The frequency on existing passenger rail transport lines is to be increased to reduce the journey time between important transport hubs in the region to a maximum of 45 minutes. In addition, rail freight transport capacity to the port of Casablanca is to be increased and logistics facilities, particularly in Ain Sebaa, as well as the railway connection to the new logistics site in Zenata, are to be improved. At the beginning of 2025, ONCF had already ordered 110 double-deck electric multiple units (EMU) from Hyundai Rotem for regional and suburban rail transport in the greater Casablanca area.
