Following the Red Line, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has now also started Automatic Train Operation (ATO) on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines. Since implementation in December 2024, there have been no safety issues or signalling violations. The return to ATO, which was first introduced in 2009, allows train speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) and reduces travel times on the aforementioned lines by approximately three minutes, and by as much as eight minutes on the Red Line. The Yellow and Green Lines have also been benefiting from ATO and faster travel times since May 2025. Following intensive training, testing and approval by the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, WMATA continues to monitor ATO performance and plans further optimisations.
