On 30th August 2024, the County Administrative Board of the Swedish region of Västra Götaland agreed on the routing and financing of a new railway line between Gothenburg and Borås worth €4.3 billion (SEK 48.5 billion). The decision was made after extensive discussions with all parties involved, including municipalities, the Swedish Transport Administration Trafikverket, the aviation infrastructure authority Swedavia AB, the West Swedish Chamber of Commerce, and business organisations. The financial obligations arising from the agreement have yet to be confirmed by the local councils of the signatory municipalities and the Västra Götaland region. Trafikverket will confirm the agreement on behalf of the government and implement the documents in an agreement on a joint route and financing. The parties have also agreed to work towards the rapid realisation of the project.
