Union Pacific (UP) has signed a seven-year contract with Rocky Mountain Steel Mills for the supply of steel rails. The agreement covers the majority of the US Class I railway company’s rail requirements and also brings an end to the pending legal disputes between the two companies. In this regard, UP has withdrawn a lawsuit previously filed in Nebraska. Rocky Mountain Steel is now part of Orion Steel. The company has invested more than EUR 850 million (USD 1 billion) in its Pueblo site and plans to put a new rolling mill for long rails into operation in 2026. The plan is to produce rails with a length of 100 m instead of the 24 m that have been standard to date.
