On 15th August 2024, US construction company Tutor Perini won a contract worth €1.5 billion (US$1.66 billion) to extend the Skyline metro line in Honolulu into the city centre. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2030. The City Centre Guideway & Stations (CCGS) contract is for the third phase of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) metro project. According to HART, this is the largest single contract of the entire project. The first phase of the project, a 17.3 km section from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium in northwest Honolulu with nine stations, opened in 2023. Work is currently underway on the next section from the stadium via the airport to Middle Street TC, which is scheduled to open at the end of 2025 and will comprise a further 8.5 km and four stops. The CCGS contract will extend the line further south-east to the Civic Centre, adding a further 5.3 km and six stops. The service will be operated by a fleet of 20 four-car metros built by Hitachi Rail. A further 1.3 km extension from the Civic Centre to the Ala Mona Centre with an intermediate station is planned but is not yet funded.
