Tunnelling for Western Sydney Airport Metro project completed

The tunnel construction for the Western Sydney Airport Metro project was completed on 27th June 2024. The test runs on the City & Southwest Line are also in the final phase. The completion of the 9.8 km twin-tube tunnel will form the backbone of the transport network in the Australian metropolis. Two tunnel boring machines (TBM) have excavated the 4.3 km tunnels from Orchard Hills to St Marys in 14 months, while two further TBMs have built the 5.5 km tunnels from Airport Business Park to Aerotropolis. The 23 km Western Sydney Airport Metro line will connect passengers to the new Western Sydney International Airport. The contract for the tunnelling works was awarded to the joint venture of CPB Contractors and Ghella in December 2021.
