US President Donald Trump has announced an investigation into California's high-speed rail (HSR) project. Trump criticised the project, originally planned as a link between Los Angeles and San Francisco, as the "worst-managed project" with billions of dollars in cost overruns. The first phase of construction includes a line of 837 km, of which 679 km are currently approved. Environmental certification is being worked on for further sections. The financing includes €4 billion (US$4.2 billion) from Proposition 1A and funds from cap-and-trade auctions. Nevertheless, there is a funding gap that is to be closed by further federal subsidies.
