On 29th January 2025, Tanzanian state railway TRC signed a contract for the construction of a 282 km standard gauge line for rail freight transport between Uvinza in Tanzania and Musongati in Burundi. The contract, worth around €2.1 billion (US$2.15 billion) and with a term of six years, was signed with a consortium of the China Railway Engineering Group (CREGC) and the China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group (CREDC). The line includes seven stations and a freight terminal in Musongati and is part of the second phase of the joint Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Tanzania – Burundi – Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) project. The DRC and Burundi are currently working on a feasibility study for the cross-border section Musongati – Kindu.
