Tanzanian state railway TRC has begun the next phase of modernising the 970 km line between Dar es Salaam and Isaka. This project is financed by a €170.9 million (US$200 million) loan from the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA), with the aim of modernising Tanzania's metre-gauge network as part of the Tanzania Intermodal Rail and Development Plan (TIRP). The government is also preparing to open up the national network to third-party operators to promote competition and increase efficiency.
