Trafikverket plans premature expansion of Iron Ore Line

The Swedish transport authority Trafikverket is planning to bring forward several railway infrastructure projects along the Malmbanan ore railway to prevent further derailments and long-term closures. In March 2024, the Swedish government asked Trafikverket to immediately begin the modernisation of the section between Luleå and Narvik in Norway. The sectional double-track expansion between Norra Sunderbyn and Sävastklinten, the construction of the passing tracks at Harrträsk, Nuortikon, Näsberg, and Murjek stations, and the expansion of the marshalling yards in Sikträsk and Nattavaara can probably start as early as 2025 or 2026, one to two years earlier than planned. A double-track expansion of the Boden – Luleå section is also planned, but the financing is still unclear. An increase in track access charges is being considered, although these were already raised by 40% in 2024.
