Three candidates are up for election to the post of Executive Director of the European Railway Agency (ERA), which has been vacant since Josef Doppelbauer retired in November 2024. The candidates are Laurent Cebulski from France, Oana Gherghinescu from Romania, and Matej Zakonjšek from Slovenia. The election will take place on 19th March 2025 during an extraordinary meeting of the ERA Board of Directors. A total of 29 votes will be cast, with each EU Member State having one vote and the European Commission having two votes. A candidate needs at least 20 votes to win.
