Italian infrastructure manager RFI has announced the deployment of the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the construction of the high-speed rail (HSR) line from Salerno to Reggio Calabria. The TBM will bore the 3 km Saginara Tunnel between Battipaglia and Romagnano. The works include 14 km of bored tunnel, 5 km of cut-and-cover and over 6 km of viaduct. Lot 1A is being built by the Xenia Consortium of Webuild, Pizzarotti, Ghella and Tunnel Pro under a €2.8 billion contract awarded by RFI in 2023.
