In less than four months, Austrian construction company Strabag successfully completed a retrofit programme for its Unimat 09-32/4S Dynamic tamping machine from manufacturer Plasser & Theurer. The machine was overhauled at Plasser & Theurer's competence centre in Linz and was ready for use again immediately after the work was completed. The universal tamping machine from Strabag had been in operation for 13 years before undergoing a comprehensive overhaul and modernisation. The retrofit project included the replacement of the tamping unit with a revised unit with frequency control, the replacement of the digital measurement recording system (DRP) with the latest version and the installation of the SmartALC Automatic Guiding Computer. In addition, the rear-view mirrors were replaced with reversing cameras and new operator seats with armrests and new function switches were installed.
