Start of construction for second cross-border line to Mongolia

On 14th May, China and Mongolia began construction of a second cross-border railway line between Gashuunsukhait and Ganqimaodu. The approximately 10 km connection is intended to make Mongolia's coal exports, which are mainly handled by truck, significantly more efficient. The railway line could enable up to 30 million t of additional exports and reduce transport costs per t from €28.42 (US$32) to €7.10 (US$8). Exports are expected to rise to 100 million t by 2025 and to 165 million t by 2026, which could generate additional annual revenues of around €1.33 billion.
