German state railway DB has begun upgrading and electrifying the 75 km Hochrheinbahn railway line between Basel Badischer Bahnhof and Erzingen. By December 2027, 130 km of overhead lines and 1,600 masts are to be installed. The Tiengen and Lauchringen stations will be converted into junction stations and 17 stations will be made disabled-accessible. In addition, three new stops will be built in Rheinfelden-Warmbach, Bad Säckingen-Wallbach and Waldshut-West. In Waldshut, the station will be rebuilt and a new track connection to Koblenz in Switzerland will be created. Once completed, the frequency of regional passenger rail transport between South Baden, Lake Constance and northern and eastern Switzerland will be increased, and the regional lines will be integrated into the trilateral Basel suburban rail network.
