Siemens Mobility has been awarded a long-term framework agreement by Irish state railway IE to modernise Ireland's railway infrastructure. The contract worth over €100 million will see Siemens deploy its Trackguard Westlock computer-based interlocking (CBI) system across the national network by 2040. Works will begin in Dublin with the installation of the system at the National Train Control Centre. The technology is supposed to improve the efficiency and reliability of train operations by continuously processing real-time data on train positions and controlling signals and points. This is to increase punctuality and reliability in both passenger and freight transport. The introduction of the Westlock system will replace the signalling infrastructure dating from the 1980s.
