Siemens puts first section of Oslo Metro into operation with CBTC

Siemens Mobility and Oslo-based public transport operator Sporveien have put the first 3 km section of the Oslo metro network into operation with the Trainguard MT communication-based train control (CBTC) system. The EUR 270 million contract signed in 2021 covers the complete renewal of the command control and signalling (CCS) technology on the 86 km network and the integration of the new 8 km Fornebubanen line with six stations. The system will be operated as an operator at Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2) and will allow 36 trains per hour instead of 28, representing a capacity increase of around 30%. For the first time in Europe, a public LTE mobile network will be used for safety-critical train radio communication in order to reduce costs. Siemens is providing Sporveien with 25 years of support with digital maintenance and Railigent X asset management.
