Siemens builds test centre for infrastructure technologies in Vienna

Siemens Mobility is building a new test centre in Vienna for the development, research and testing of new technologies for the railway infrastructure. The approximately 2,500 m² test centre is already under construction and is scheduled to be occupied in stages starting in autumn and fully put into operation in 2026. The test centre will create digital twins of existing infrastructure to test innovations without disrupting railway operations. The focus will be on the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 and its integration with the DS3 IT cloud platform. The test centre will be used for the further development of Austrian state railway ÖBB's railway network until 2038 and for the introduction of driverless operation on Vienna's metro line U5. Siemens is investing around €25 million in the construction. Up to 100 projects can be tested and over 1,000 virtual machines operated at the centre.
