On 23rd February 2026, the Ministry of Transport of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, together with German state railway DB and AKN Eisenbahn, presented 13 projects for expansion, renovation, electrification, and reactivation in Schleswig-Holstein for the coming years. The announced investment volume totals EUR 900 million, of which EUR 200 million is to come from the federal government's special fund. The projects are intended to implement measures earlier than previously planned over the next five years. Measures include platform extensions on the Hamburg – Kiel line and in Lindaunis, platform improvements in Jübek, upgrades on the Neumünster – Bad Oldesloe and Kiel – Preetz lines, an electric interlocking system in Niebüll, the modernisation of the Marschbahn line between Glückstadt and Itzehoe, the expansion of the S5 line on the AKN line Hamburg – Kaltenkirchen, the renewal of the AKN bridge over the A7 motorway as well as the construction of the Henstedt-Ulzburg West station. The complete double-track expansion of the Marschbahn Niebüll – Westerland line was also identified as a priority for further planning, for which the German Federal Parliament was asked to approve funding quickly.
