São Paulo increases 2026 rail budget to EUR 1.3 billion

The Brazilian federal state of São Paulo has approved a rail budget of around EUR 1.3 billion (BRL 8 billion) for 2026. More than half of this will go towards the metro infrastructure, specifically extensions and newly constructed sections. The funds were approved by the Legislative Assembly and are earmarked for projects overseen by the Secretariat for Investment Partnerships (SPI) to expedite implementation and delivery schedules. Construction of the 15.3 km fully underground metro line 6 from Brasilândia to São Joaquim is in its final stages of structural work. The project has a volume of EUR 3.1 billion, and according to authorities, it is over 75% complete. The Brasilândia – Perdizes section will begin operating in October 2026, with full opening planned for 2027. For the 3.3 km extension of line 4 to Taboão da Serra with two new stations, the state government has also structured a financing package of EUR 645 million (USD 750 million) as an addendum to the existing concession agreement, including mechanisms linked to the World Bank.
