The project company Rail Baltica has determined the route for Rail Baltica railway project on the Kaunas – Polish border section. Specific areas and properties located on this section of the line have been identified. All interested parties have two months to view the draft of the specific spatial planning document and submit further proposals. After the public presentation of the concrete solutions, the process of coordination and approval of the plan will begin. When choosing the alternative to the proposed route in 2022, the opinion of the majority of the population was taken into account and the shortest alternative to the Rail Baltica route, which is furthest away from urban areas, was selected. On the section from Kaunas to the Polish border, 116 new structures, such as railway viaducts, level crossings, and wildlife bridges, are planned. It is expected that the plan will be prepared and submitted to the government for approval by the end of 2023.
