RFI completes modernisation of Bologna – Milan HSR line

On 18th August 2024, Italian infrastructure operator RFI completed the modernisation work on the high-speed rail (HSR) line Bologna – Milan on schedule. The project, which included the replacement of several switches, began on 12th August 2024 and led to a temporary diversion of high-speed trains (HST) to the conventional line. With the completion of the work, trains are once again using the HSR tracks, but the regulations for infrastructure renewal only require a gradual increase in speed on the sections affected by the maintenance. The project involved around 90 technicians from RFI and associated contractors working around the clock on three construction sites. The work included the installation of new switches, each 140 m long and weighing around 200 t. This work is part of a wider extraordinary maintenance plan for the HSR line.
