Italian infrastructure operator RFI has completed the installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on 1,400 km of its network. This measure is part of Mission M3C1 of the Italian Economic and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and is being financed with €2.5 billion. A total of around 2,800 km are to be equipped with ERTMS by June 2026. The work was carried out by Hitachi, Alstom, Mermec and Progress Rail and covered 21 sections of track throughout Italy.
