Dutch infrastructure operator ProRail has given the go-ahead for the EUR 246 million upgrade of the Amsterdam – Alkmaar line. Work will begin in 2026 and is scheduled for completion in 2031. The aim is to create capacity for up to six long-distance and four to six regional trains per direction per hour as part of the High Frequency Service (PHS) programme. Plans include a new storage yard for 12-car trains in Heerhugowaard, the renovation and expansion of Alkmaar station, modernisation and track optimisation in Uitgeest, as well as safety measures at 18 level crossings and noise protection. The maximum speed will remain at 130 km/h.
