The Ontario government has started construction work on the Bowmanville extension to the GO Transit suburban rail network in the greater Toronto area. The project involves extending the Lakeshore East line 18.7 km eastwards via Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) tracks from the current terminus at Durham College in Oshawa to the Thornton's Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice and Bowmanville stations. The Bowmanville Construction Partners consortium, consisting of Ledcor CMI and Dragados Canada, was selected as the construction manager in 2023. The first phase will involve rebuilding bridges along the line, laying pipes and improving the Durham College Oshawa GO station and an adjacent VIA Rail building. The main construction contracts and the date for the start of operations are still to be determined. Once completed, services are expected to run every 30 minutes during peak hours, hourly outside peak hours and every two hours at weekends. 17,000 journeys per day are expected by 2041.
