ÖBB develops digital twin for railway infrastructure

Austrian state railway ÖBB is working with Detecon on a digital twin of its entire railway infrastructure to increase network capacity from 175 million train-km to 255 million train-km per year by 2040 without additional track construction. Since June 2023, a digital replica of the railway infrastructure has been created as part of the INFRA Digital Twin programme, which develops reference systems for facilities and networks and integrates various IT systems. Detecon provides support as an interface between programme management and implementation teams. A major advance is the Geographic Track Network (GeoGNZ), which digitally maps the actual track layout and links structural and operational networks. The Asset Reference System (ARS) enables the mapping of signals, signal boxes and other infrastructure. The integration of ÖBB's five core business areas into the reference systems creates a consistent view of the infrastructure and improves the control of railway operations.
