Ontario Northland, the state-owned operator of the Northlander passenger rail transport service, acquired 207 km of track on the former Newmarket Line from Canadian National (CN) between North Bay and Washago in the province of Ontario at the end of February 2026. The purchase, costing EUR 119.8 million (USD 138 million), is intended to enable the Northlander passenger rail transport service to resume on the line, with operations scheduled to start through the course of 2026. The line is also to be made available for rail freight transport, thereby providing a direct link to the south of the province.
