The port of Rotterdam is to receive a new rail infrastructure consisting of six tracks for 740 m long trains used in rail freight transport, which are to be built by Swietelsky on the Maasvlakte, the westernmost part of the port, by mid-2027. The infrastructure expansion is necessary to enable the growth of rail freight transport from the port to the European hinterland and to alleviate capacity bottlenecks, according to the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Container throughput in the port of Rotterdam will grow steadily in the coming years, which is why the Port of Rotterdam Authority, ProRail, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management are investing in sustainable and efficient rail development. Swietelsky will start work on the track bundle at the beginning of 2025, which is being financed with the help of a subsidy from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
