The UK infrastructure operator Network Rail is investing €5.28 million (GB£4.5 million) in the modernisation of the Eskmeals Viaduct on the Cumbrian Coast Line to protect it against the effects of climate change. In the process, 190 newly manufactured sleepers made of synthetic wood are to replace the 160 real wood sleepers on the viaduct. This will double the service life from 25 to 50 years and make the structure more resilient. The work from 6th to 23rd September 2024 will require the viaduct to be closed for 16 days.
