The governments of China, Tanzania, and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to revitalise the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority's (Tazara) 1,860 km railway line. The single-track line for passenger rail transport and rail freight transport connecting Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with Kapiri-Mposhi in Zambia was put into operation in 1976 and was financed by an interest-free loan from China. With the MoU, the countries aim to improve the intermodal rail-sea transport network. In January 2024, the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) sent a task force to examine the financial and operational conditions for the revitalisation.
