Ministry of Transport and Metrorex sign financing agreements for two metro extensions

The Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and Bucharest's metro operator Metrorex have signed two financing contracts for the extension of the Bucharest metro network, comprising two sections totalling 18.6 km and 20 stations. The first contract worth around €295 million (RON 1.47 billion) concerns the first, 6.6 km section of the M6 metro line, which runs over six stations and between the existing 1 Mai station and the future Tokyo station. The section is scheduled for completion in 2026. The second section will be 7.6 km long, have six stations between Tokyo and the airport and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The second financing contract was signed for the 11.9 km extension project of the M4 metro line between Bucharest North Station and Progresul Station with 14 stations. The section is scheduled for completion in 2029. The value of the entire project is around €2.6 billion, of which €1.85 billion is covered by the EU through the Cohesion Fund and €321 million from the state budget, while €401 million is the non-eligible value of the project.
