Metra announces infrastructure programme for 2025

Chicago's suburban rail operator Metra has announced an infrastructure programme for 2025. The plan includes improvements to 52 stations, the replacement of 43 level crossings and extensive work on tracks, bridges, signalling systems and electrical installations. Major projects include bridge replacement on the UP North Line, improvements to the Metra Electric, and the replacement of 117,000 ties on several lines. In total, Metra is investing €32.2 million in station and parking improvements, €44.4 million in track maintenance, €42.6 million in bridge projects, €5.4 million in level crossing renewals, as well as €36.2 million in signalling systems and electrical work. The funding comes from previous capital programmes and external sources. Construction has begun and is expected to continue into the autumn of 2025, depending on the weather.
