Konkan Railway merges with IR

The merger of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) with Indian state railway IR has made significant progress as the state governments of Kerala, Goa and Karnataka have approved the merger. The state of Maharashtra has also given its support on the condition that the name Konkan Railway is retained. KRCL, founded in the 1990s as a joint venture between IR and the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, had difficulties in financing and implementing important infrastructure projects due to its corporate structure. The merger is expected to enable IR to provide better funding and resources to take these projects forward. The Maharashtra government will formally communicate its approval for the merger to the Ministry of Railways shortly.
