Kochi plans to extend metro network

The extension of the metro network in the Indian city of Kochi was recommended in an overview of the city's transport infrastructure and services. The mobility plan contracted by Kochi Metro Rail identified priority corridors with a total length of almost 100 km. While the majority of these corridors are earmarked for bus services, a 14 km north-south corridor along Seaport Airport Road on the eastern side of the city is being projected as a metro line. This would connect the two arms of the 29.1 km Phase 1 U-shaped metro line already in operation and the 11.3 km Phase 2 line currently under construction. From Kalamassery, the new line would run 6.3 km south to Kakkanad, then share a 2.4 km section from Infopark/Smart City to Chittethukara. From there it would continue on new infrastructure 5.5 km south via Irumpanam to the south-eastern end of the existing metro at Thripinuthura. The Phase 3 extension north of Aluva was already planned and would add about 20 km.
