The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed two loan agreements with the Indian government totalling around €924 million (JPY 161 billion) for metro expansion projects. The first financing agreement covers the final tranche of €334 million for metro line 3 in Mumbai, while the second, worth around €590 million, is for the development of the fourth phase of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) network in Delhi. Both loans have a term of 30 years. The 33.5 km Mumbai metro line 3, also known as Aqua Line, is scheduled to open in September 2024. It will serve 27 stations between Cuffe Parade and Aarey Colony. The fourth phase of the MRTS programme in Delhi includes the construction of 65.2 km of metro lines along three priority corridors of lines 7, 8 and 10.
