HSR projects not economically viable

According to a study on high-speed rail (HSR) projects in Finland, they are not economically viable and would have a large impact on the climate. The study, contracted by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport and Communications, compared costs and benefits, saying the benefits would be less than the costs and the emissions would be enormous. The projects would require a significant financial contribution from the public sector, but other sources of revenue were also identified. According to current preliminary estimates at 2022 prices, the investment costs of the projects would be around €3.4 billion for the HSR line to Turku, around €1.8 billion for the eastern line and either around €4 billion for the two options for the Finland line with airport connection and extension of the main line or around €5.5 billion for airport connection and new HSR line.
