HSR line Elk – Trakiszki to be opened by 2030

Polish infrastructure operator PKP PLK is planning to open the high-speed rail (HSR) line between Elk and Trakiszki by 2030 at the latest. However, international connections to Kaunas and Vilnius are not realistic until after 2030, as Lithuania is behind schedule with construction work. The Elk – Trakiszki section is part of the Rail Baltica HSR line connecting Poland to the Baltic states. Until then, Polish and Lithuanian operators intend to use the existing infrastructure and provide additional connections to Mockava in Lithuania from December 2025, with a change to broad-gauge trains to Vilnius. The long-term financing of these connections will be regulated by the fourth EU railway package and market developments after 2030.
