HS2 project in Birmingham reaches halfway point in tunnelling

The tunnel boring machine has excavated half of the 5.6 km long Bromford Tunnel for the HSR project HS2 in Birmingham. Since the start of work in Water Orton in 2023, 2.8 km of the first tunnel borehole has already been excavated and built. The 1,600 t tunnel boring machine is working around 40 m underground towards Washwood Heath in Birmingham and has already passed under Park Hall Nature Reserve and the River Tame. It is currently passing Castle Vale and will continue its work alongside and under the M6 before breaking through to Washwood Heath in early 2025. The second tunnel boring machine began construction of the second bore of the HS2 tunnel in Birmingham in March 2024 and is due to complete its work at the end of 2025.
